Web hosting is not just web hosting as many will claim. There are thousands of providers on the market, many of them resellers selling what is essentially a share of their own hosting account. This is particularly true when it comes to US based web hosts. Are Australian web hosts better than those overseas?
Probably not better but they could be better for your business. First, if you host your site on a US based server, you will need to use Google Webmaster Tools to tell Google that your site is targeting Australian audiences. You will also need to use the word Australia a lot in your onsite content. Without these steps, you could find that most of your traffic comes from the US.
If you have the money, and a registered business name, then buying a dot com dot AU domain name is much better for your business. Host it in Australia and you are sending a clear message to the search engines. (It wont hurt to go into Webmaster Tools and nominate Australia anyway).
There are other issues that need consideration as well. Several months ago Australia had a serious (although shortlived) problem where our internet link to the US was down. Traffic coming to and from Australia was extremely slow since all traffic had to be routed through Perth and Africa. Hosting in Australia prevents any issues with foreign connections.
Finally, hosting your web site here in Australia means the hosting business is open when you are. There will be someone there to answer the phone (no international calls!), someone local to fix the problem.

The internet has grown at an incredible rate over the last ten years and with it a large number of web host services. Many of the big providers also sell what are known as ‘reseller services’. The problem with reseller services is that an individual can purchase this product paying by the month.
Having set up a good looking web site, they can then start to sell web hosting services themselves. That’s fine and there are many hundreds of honest resellers here in Australia. However, like all businesses, there are a small number of not so honest resellers. They will offer you a great product at an unbeatable price – often only if you pay for six or twelve months of hosting.
What do they do – they build up a nice clientele who are all paying six or twelve months in advance. However, the reseller then pulls the plug and doesn’t renew their account. This leaves you with no hosting, since the resellers account becomes suspended (and all accounts under them). It can also be difficult recovering your files from the site so you can transfer them to a new host.
When looking for a domain web hosting service – check their credentials first. How long have they been around? Do they have a good reputation? If the price sounds to good to be true – perhaps it is. Treat super cheap hosting services with a little caution.
